Collection Development Policy for the Island Library
A well thought out and thorough collection development policy is the bedrock for a successful and sustainable library. A solid collection development policy protects information professionals and ensures that patrons are receiving robust, varied, diverse, and inclusive content. Collection development policies should be reviewed and updated on a regularly scheduled basis to ensure the library is meeting the needs and demands of its community and users. The Island Library is modeled after the Monroe County Public Library, the Florida Keys, the vibrant communities within, and personal professional experiences.
II.B. Students evaluate and select print and digital information resources and systems to meet needs of users.

LibGuide on Banned Books
· Home
With the rise in challenges and bans directed towards books and information resources, it is essential to have reliable, accurate information readily available. Print resources have been carefully selected to encompass titles that have been challenged or banned as well as Reader’s Advisory, book journals, and reading logs to encourage demand for and engagement with controversial material. Digital resources showcase authors with challenged or banned work discussing their creative and personal journeys; PEN America’s collated data on book challenges and bans circa 2024; and even Book Resumes, which aid readers and information professionals in advocating for access by providing factual information about specific titles (including relevant publisher, readers’ guide questions, and more). The LibGuide website, as well as PDF screenshots, are providing for viewing.
II.C. Students understand and use appropriate information technology for information services.

Copyright Professional Development Presentation
This professional training focuses on copyright information relevant to the Island Library. Again drawing from professional and personal experience with the Monroe County Public Library, the Digital Rights Management (DRM) professional development highlights what DRM is and how the Island Library provides digital materials to patrons. Not all users understand that Libby is an app used to access a specific library’s curated catalog. Users mistakenly believe that they can access all titles and materials via Libby; there is a disconnect between what might be available through Libby and what material(s) have been purchased and are available via a specific library’s catalog. By offering training about the minutiae involved with ordering digital materials, information professionals are better equipped to assist patrons or request materials for the library collection. Digital materials cannot, and should not, fully supplant physical items; instead, digital materials can augment and elevate physical collections and resources in order to best serve patrons and users.
